Going Green

Lucky Charms

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I don’t have a lick of the Irish in me.

The Irish Flag

I still think Jimmy Malay is still mad at me for asking why he had the Italian Flag in his basement.  A high school romantic interest, we were sneaking beer out of his basement fridge. I am sure I wouldn’t have been so confused  if I hadn’t had so many Mickey’s Big Mouth Beers.

The Chicago River

But after spending so many of my formative years in Chicago, a city that treated St. Patty’s day like a National Holiday I’ve come to embrace the day.

I’m a Snake

Snake Lunar New Year

Happy Chinese New Year!

It’s the year of the Snake.

I was born in the year of the Snake so I am partial to this Lunar New Year.

Live snakes completely and utterly freak me out.

The site of a live one will have me squealing like a toddler and running for the hills.

A Snake in any other form is just fine.

I’ve always loved this photograph.

Reed Krakoff, one of my current fashion loves, hit a home run with this skirt from his 2013 Spring Collection.

It’s been done a million times, but I love a Snake Ring.

I covet this Victorian era beauty.

I’d love to store this ring in this gorgeous snake skin jewelry box.

I am sorry to have missed out on these One King’s Lane  Cobra Candlesticks.

The 1960’s DC Town House interior designer Hillary Thomas created is spectacular.

This room in particular.

The color combo makes me swoon.

I love the framed snake prints and of course, the Cobra Candlesticks!

It’s been a few years back, but this April, 2009 Elle Decor cover has always been a favorite.

The framed snake illustrations have a lot to do with it.

And how could you forget this little fella?

“The Jungle Book’s”  resident snake,  “Kaa”.

A Little Updating with Big Results

I just made some changes to my Family Room.

I was bored with the room and our cowhide rug was looking a little rough.

I didn’t have a ton of money so I had to choose wisely.

First up was the rug and we all know how budget busting rugs can be.

I happened to find a rug at Pottery Barn.  It was perfect both in looks and price.

I really wanted to get new side tables.  The tables I currently own are from Ikea and I painted them Robin’s Egg Blue.  They were meant to be temporary.

 That was 8 years ago.

I still can’t find the perfect solution so they have remained.

Not such a bad deal because they are beaten up on a daily basis by my 5 year old.

So instead of new tables I decided to concentrate on the lamps that were currently on the tables.

I lucked out again at Pottery Barn and found two adorable lamp shades on super sale, and for less than $50 my lamps got a whole new look.

I still thought they needed a little more pizazz, so I took decided to take them up a notch by purchasing some finals from Chic Shop & Hillary Thomas.  I was in purchasing some finials for a client and was seduced by these beauties. They are from her line Rock ‘n Rolla and named “Careless Whisper”.

 Finials really make a lamp.

Without them in my opinion it’s like going out with a full face of make up and forgetting the lipstick.

Hillary’s finials add a” wow” factor to any lamp.

The thing about decorating is that most of us don’t have unlimited funds.  So make purchases that are small but have a big impact.  Accessories such as a new piece of pottery,  plant in a new vessel, or throw pillows which can breath some life into a tired couch and can really make a difference.

So one weekend, a little $ and my Family Room has a new look.

Even Pablo likes it!
