WHITE SHOES ARE CHIC

White shoes and jeans

I love white shoes.

For the longest time I just thought they were tacky.

Okay if you were a nurse or a bride.

Something Mrs. Roper would wear on a cruise.

 Very Carmela Soprano.

I hadn’t owned or wanted to own a pair since my white Buck shoe craze/phase in college.

And that was a really long time ago.

But now I own two pairs.

And I don’t think they are tacky at all.

Prada White Penny Loafers

I bought these white loafers two months ago and I haven’t taken them off.

My new go to shoe, they’re neutral and go with everything.

They look great with all sorts of jean styles, shorts, and pants.

I keep on trying to put other shoes in the rotation, but I keep on circling back to these.

I also have a pair of white patent leather Roger Vivier flats similar to the ones above, but with a black buckle.

A bit worn, but so loved that in my closet they shall remain.

RAINY DAY GEAR

5

It’s been a while since I’ve had to get the umbrella and rain boots out, but we are experiencing a rain storm in Los Angeles that’s one for the records.

California Rain Forecast

I really don’t mind it at all. California is in a serious drought and we need this downpour desperately.

I like the change in weather and the rain is nice.  It’s hard to complain about months of sunny skies and low 70’s when my Chicagoland sister is smack in the middle of the Polar Vortex (she now thinks  Zero is balmy) but it does get a tad boring having the same forcast day after day.

I was looking forward to staying in baking and making soup, but had a few necessary errands before becoming a shut in.

Scalamadre Umbrella

I dusted off my rainy day gear and got ready to brave the rain. After getting dressed I realized my raincoat was 20 years old and needed to be put down.  My beloved Scalamadre Zebra umbrella has been played with too many times by a 6-year-old  and is bent and sad looking.

Hunter-Wellies

And I really wanted a shorter rain boot for running around.  I love my Hunter Wellies, but sometimes they’re a pain to pull on and off.

When I returned to my warm house and a crackling fire I poured a large glass of wine and  started doing a little internet shopping to update my rainy day gear.

Much more fun than sorting tax receipts.

How cute are these Valentino rain boots?

 I’m obsessed with anything with a “V” and a Spike .

Valentino Rain Boots

www.saksfifthavenue.com

It’s a tight race, because these Rag and Bone for Hunter boots are adorable.  Any black and navy color combo always catches my eye.

Rag and Bone Rain Boots

I love a trench and this is the perfect model to replace my sad old coat.

The khaki/camel color is classic and timeless.

The price is right too.

It’s $128 and you can get 35% off your purchases!

Gap-TrenchCoat

www.gap.com

This Jean Paul Gaultier is the perfect umbrella to replace my newly retired one.

It’s fun and sure to brighten any rainy day.

I also love that it’s compact and I can throw it in a bag or purse.

It may be another 6 months, but  the next time the rain comes I am armed and ready!

It’s hard to go wrong with this tray.

The blue color is so chic and will be a nice accent color to other serving pieces. Or use it on a table or desk, great for office supplies or a perfume collection.

Sandal Season

Girl in sandals

I love sandal season.

Because sandal season means summer is here.

And I love summer and all it entails.

I’ve recently done some sandal shopping and I am ready for:

Jazz Nights at LACMA, Wine Tastings at Barnsdall Park,  El Fresco restaurant dining, Summer BBQ’s, flea markets, beach parties, Malibu, summer vacations, and weekend getaways.

jcrew26

 Photo: www.promenadeonthepeninsula.com

I picked up the black and lilac sandals from J Crew.

A great gladiator style, with a smidge of a metallic heel.

I just couldn’t resist the lilac.

They’ve been fun so far and I am surprised at how many different colors they work with.

I thought I’d use the black more, but the lilac have proven to be more of a staple.

And with the $150 price tag (now on sale for $119), who could pass them up?

Liliac Gladiator

Buy them here:  J Crew

I also picked up two pairs at the Neiman Marcus Shoe Sale after lunch at Mariposa with friends.

If you meet 3 of your best girlfriends for lunch during a shoe sale, it is a guarantee that you are coming home with some new shoes and a pop over in your belly.

I love the color combo of the Lanvin Flats, a little white, brown, and black. They have a bit of a heel so they work with everything and the ankle strap gives the shoe some sex appeal without going over board.

Lanvin Sandals

I also couldn’t resist this pair of Marni sandals.

The cherry color is gorgeous and they just so happen to match my favorite necklace from J Crew.

And finally I needed a new pair of sandals with a heel that I could actually walk in.

I found these Elizabeth and James sandals and they fit the bill.

These Chanel Sandals are next on my list.

I love the chain embellishment.

They add a chic element, but the flat heel makes the ideal for running around.

Falling in Love Again

xoxo

When you are with your mate for a long time, you get used to them. You love them without doubt, but life, kids, etc. takes a toll on a relationship.  You know what I’m talking about….It’s just not sexy time as much as it once was.

And then one ordinary day you take a second look and realize why you fell in love in the first place. And bam… all the fun, goodness and sexiness comes roaring back .

Just like when you  were falling in love.

Jonathan Adler

Well I have always loved Jonathan Adler. His quirky goodness. His campy style.

It was love at first site.

I have some his earliest pieces of pottery. They’re classics. But then, I took him for granted and started driving by his store.

Occasionally, popping in for a gift,  a decorative pillow, some bookends.  But I wasn’t coveting any furniture.  I kind of just got used to his designs being around and started to ignore what was going on in his stores.

And then one ordinary day, I took a second look and realized why I fell for him and his work.

Now, I’m in love all over again.

Here are some of the things that are rocking my world and must have!

My 5 Favorite Salads

Carrie table scape

I love a hearty salad.

The perfect one plate meal.

Here are 5 that are at the top of my list.

It’s no surprise that most come from my all time favorite cookbooks.

Roasted Butternut Squash Salad

1. Roasted Butternut Squash Salad with Warm Cider Vinaigrette

31_th_book_bcbtb

The Barefoot Contessa does it again!

This recipe, featured in her Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics Cookbook  is

a great winter time meal, accompanied by a nice bowl of soup and crunchy bread.

Time Saver: I buy squash that has already been peeled and cut so all I have to do is throw it on a pan.

MachePhoto: Kitchenography

2. Salad of Mache,  Raw Asparagus, Pistachios and Parmigiano-Reggiano

Zuni Cafe Cookbook

This recipe comes from the Zuni Cafe Cookbook  and is a great  Spring time salad especially with the season’s first crop of asparagus.

Judy Rodgers is a genius.Zuni Cafe is one of my all time favorite restaurants and the cookbook is a gem.

Time Saver: Trader Joe’s sells Mache pre-washed in bags.  I also buy my shelled pistachios there.

winter-salad

3.  Winter Chopped Salad

Seriously Simple Holidays

This recipe comes from Diane Rossen Worthington’s: Seriously Simple Holidays.

I make this over and over and over.

I crave it.

Time Saver: Buy a rotisserie chicken!

4. Persimmon & Pomegranate Salad with Arugula & Hazelnuts

Sunday Suppers at Lucques

This gorgeous salad is from Suzanne Goin’s Sunday Suppers at Lucques.

It’s another great winter salad. Persimmons are at their peak.
Always worth waiting for, especially in this salad.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of a Sunday Supper at Goin’s consistently awesome LA restaurant Lucques, you can recreate some of her menus at home.

This is a must own cookbook.

5. Iceberg Lettuce and Watercress Salad with Blue Cheese Dressing

The Gourmet Cookbook

Nothing wrong with a wedge. Decadent and delicious. Crunchy Goodness.

Yum!

The recipe for this Blue Cheese Dressing is my hands down favorite.

This recipes comes from The Gourmet Cookbook by Ruth Reichl.

It’s a well-worn and loved cook book in my kitchen.

When I serve this at a dinner party there are no leftovers on the plates.

Sometimes when I am home alone (which is very seldom) I make this recipe, pour a glass of wine and sit down and savor the delights of this salad.

It is a bit naughty, especially when I crumble a piece of well cooked bacon on top so I don’t do it often, but when I do it’s worth the extra workout.

So what are your favorite salads?

I’d love to hear.  It’s always great to get a new one into rotation.

Best Coffee by a Longshot!

Flat White

I am obsessed with Coffee+Food (more on that later) located in the Old Wild Oats Cafe space on Melrose.

One of the main reasons, besides the awesome Panini’s and the Kale Salad (it’s addictive, you’ve been warned) is their coffee.

Julio Urbinato

Soooo while I was dreaming of the coffee to come I struck up a conversation with the oh so cute and charming man behind the coffee machine.

His name is Julio Uriarte and he is actually a “guest” barista representing the coffee company and he’s fabulous.

But the coffee he uses is even more fabulous.

Long Shot Coffee Beans The coffee beans come from Longshot Espresso.

It’s smooth, rich and strong, but it doesn’t have the bitterness that some chain coffees have.

And it’s not so strong that it melts your stomach lining.

Longshot Coffee-1

Photo: LA Weekly

So here is the scoop on Longshot Espresso.

Aussie, Mark Baird  relocated from Sydney to Los Angeles and discovered that our dear City of Angels didn’t have the espresso he loved and served his customers back in Australia.

He then set out on a mission to find a coffee that would not only satisfy his longing for a good bean, but to rescue Angeleno’s who have been sipping the bad stuff for so long.

He tested various roasts and beans for over a year until he found the perfect blend.

And that would be the classic, Longshot Australian Roast.

Longshot Espresso can be ordered on-line. It’s $14 a pound which is super reasonable for a gourmet coffee.

If you are having a party, they have a mobile espresso bar!

Brilliant if you need to sober people up before they head home.

The mobile espresso bar has also graced many a TV and movie set.
It’s the go to coffee service  for some of the best caterers and party planners out there.

If you are a simple pedestrian like me. you’re in luck, you can pick up a cup or some beans at

the Yamashiro (season starts April, 2013) or Sherman Oaks Farmer’s Market.

Or my beloved Coffee + Food.

Do it soon.

Julio’s guest starring stint is coming to an end.

Ask for the flat white.

Yum.

xoxo Yours Truly,

Pleasantly caffeinated, Carrie

I love this heart bowl.  Perfect for a key drop or place to throw you jewelry when you take it off each night, or a bowl for nuts. Another item I love from Garde is this gorgeous brass bottle opener.  This one is the “Eclipse” and it was designed by Osi Masanori for Futagami.
