Best Coffee by a Longshot!

Flat White

I am obsessed with Coffee+Food (more on that later) located in the Old Wild Oats Cafe space on Melrose.

One of the main reasons, besides the awesome Panini’s and the Kale Salad (it’s addictive, you’ve been warned) is their coffee.

Julio Urbinato

Soooo while I was dreaming of the coffee to come I struck up a conversation with the oh so cute and charming man behind the coffee machine.

His name is Julio Uriarte and he is actually a “guest” barista representing the coffee company and he’s fabulous.

But the coffee he uses is even more fabulous.

Long Shot Coffee Beans The coffee beans come from Longshot Espresso.

It’s smooth, rich and strong, but it doesn’t have the bitterness that some chain coffees have.

And it’s not so strong that it melts your stomach lining.

So here is the scoop on Longshot Espresso.

Aussie, Mark Baird  relocated from Sydney to Los Angeles and discovered that our dear City of Angels didn’t have the espresso he loved and served his customers back in Australia.

He then set out on a mission to find a coffee that would not only satisfy his longing for a good bean, but to rescue Angeleno’s who have been sipping the bad stuff for so long.

He tested various roasts and beans for over a year until he found the perfect blend.

And that would be the classic, Longshot Australian Roast.

Longshot Espresso can be ordered on-line. It’s $14 a pound which is super reasonable for a gourmet coffee.

If you are having a party, they have a mobile espresso bar!

Brilliant if you need to sober people up before they head home.

The mobile espresso bar has also graced many a TV and movie set.
It’s the go to coffee service  for some of the best caterers and party planners out there.

If you are a simple pedestrian like me. you’re in luck, you can pick up a cup or some beans at

the Yamashiro (season starts April, 2013) or Sherman Oaks Farmer’s Market.

Or my beloved Coffee + Food.

Do it soon.

Julio’s guest starring stint is coming to an end.

Ask for the flat white.

Yum.

xoxo Yours Truly,

Pleasantly caffeinated, Carrie

Packing for the Desert

la_quinta

We are heading to the Desert for the long weekend and I can’t wait.

The Desert restores me and I always come back to Los Angeles relaxed, refreshed and calm (unless traffic is a bitch coming back).

Here are a few of the things I’m packing.

This Ikea bag is perfect for throwing towels, goggles, sunscreen, snacks, you name it.

It’s a big one and holds everything our family needs poolside.

The Tom Ford’s have come and gone, but the Ray Ban Aviator has been my go to shades for over 20 years now.

I have my college sorority sister Helaine to thank for introducing me to this style.

They’ll be traveling with me.

10 Holiday Gift Ideas under $75

I always need suggestions for Christmas Gifts, especially those under $75.

Small tokens of appreciation, stocking stuffers, Secret Santa gifts, girlfriend and holiday hostess gifts.

I thought I might share some of my favorite Holiday Gift finds with all of you.

$49.99

Buy here 12/1: www.neimanmarcus.com

I love these Derek Lam Slippers from the brilliant collaboration between two of my favorite retailors, Neiman Marcus and Target.  All the items are available in stores and on line Saturday, December 1st.  I could actually do all my shopping in one swoop by visiting the site, but if I had to narrow it down to one item, it would be these magnificent leopard slippers.

$18

Buy it here: www.jaysonhome.com

I love this heart bowl.  Perfect for a key drop or place to throw you jewelry when you take it off each night, or a bowl for nuts. This sweetheart of a gift is available at Jayson Home, a favorite Chicago based store of mine.  I remember when Jayson Home opened and was primarily a garden and flower store,  now it’s grown into huge retail, on line and catalog success.

$30

Buy them here: www.gardeshop.com

It is always great to have some chic and beautiful hand towels in your powder room.  A great gift because it’s a little luxury you might not allow yourself.  I love these Fouta Turkish Towels from Garde.   Garde is a great store filled with uniquely curated home goods, textiles, jewelry and other treasures that you won’t find any place else.  If you are an Angeleno’s pop by the store on Beverly Blvd. at Vista, it’s a beautiful shop.

$50

Buy it here: www.shop.gardeshop.com

Another item I love from Garde is this gorgeous brass bottle opener.  This one is the “Eclipse” and it was designed by Osi Masanori for Futagami.

It will look beautiful on any bar and it’s another one of those useful, “so glad to have it” things you will use all the time.

$29.95

Buy it here: www.cb2.com

I adore these pig book ends from CB2.  Great for any room and any age.

The price is right too.

$68

Buy it here: www.anthropologie.com

The “Love” pillow from Anthropolgie will look great on any sofa, chair or bed.  It’s 20×20 and made of wool crewel work over a paint by number “love” cut out on front and flower scene on back.  The pillow was created by artist Trey Speegle who has done many other items for Anthropologie, including dishes which I received a few years back from my ultra chic mother in law.

$22

Buy it here: www.heathceramics.com

Stuck for an idea?  You will never fail with a Heath Ceramic Bud Vase.

I have yet to meet anyone who doesn’t adore this little gem of a vase.

$49.50

Buy it here: www.jcrew.com

Color Block madness continues with this number from JCrew.

I love the hot pink and camel colors.  You can pop this into your large everyday bag or use it on it’s own as a clutch.

Super Cute.

$75

Buy it here: www.harbingerla.com

This Sister Parrish tissue holder is nothing to sneeze at and if you live in LA pop into Harbinger, the awesome showroom and home to Lucas Interiors where they carry them.  Honestly, I detest a kleenex box sitting out, so if you need to have a tissue nearby at least the box will be styling!

I’d love to hear your gift ideas!

Happy Shopping!

A Little Updating with Big Results

I just made some changes to my Family Room.

I was bored with the room and our cowhide rug was looking a little rough.

I didn’t have a ton of money so I had to choose wisely.

First up was the rug and we all know how budget busting rugs can be.

I happened to find a rug at Pottery Barn.  It was perfect both in looks and price.

I really wanted to get new side tables.  The tables I currently own are from Ikea and I painted them Robin’s Egg Blue.  They were meant to be temporary.

 That was 8 years ago.

I still can’t find the perfect solution so they have remained.

Not such a bad deal because they are beaten up on a daily basis by my 5 year old.

So instead of new tables I decided to concentrate on the lamps that were currently on the tables.

I lucked out again at Pottery Barn and found two adorable lamp shades on super sale, and for less than $50 my lamps got a whole new look.

I still thought they needed a little more pizazz, so I took decided to take them up a notch by purchasing some finals from Chic Shop & Hillary Thomas.  I was in purchasing some finials for a client and was seduced by these beauties. They are from her line Rock ‘n Rolla and named “Careless Whisper”.

 Finials really make a lamp.

Without them in my opinion it’s like going out with a full face of make up and forgetting the lipstick.

Hillary’s finials add a” wow” factor to any lamp.

The thing about decorating is that most of us don’t have unlimited funds.  So make purchases that are small but have a big impact.  Accessories such as a new piece of pottery,  plant in a new vessel, or throw pillows which can breath some life into a tired couch and can really make a difference.

So one weekend, a little $ and my Family Room has a new look.

Even Pablo likes it!

xoxo Carrie & Mr. P

A Night Out on the Farm

I love my  visits to the midwest, especially during the summer.

Last night we went out to my favorite haunt when I am visiting my sister.

It’s called Heritage Prairie Farm and we went for Mike’s Wood Burning Oven Pizza night.  The ingredients are all plucked from the farm and local food artisans.  The pizza oven is set up outside in back of the little farm stand.  You sit on picnic tables mere feet from an adorable Burrow, Goats and Corn.  Once you place your order you head on into the farm stand for beverages.  That night the signature drink was fresh honey, mint, lemonade and vodka, served in Mason Jars (of course). We loved the pizza so much that were eating off our children’s plates, when the tears started we realized it was in our best interest to order another pizza. We ordered a simple margarita for the kids (the mozzarella made just a few miles away), 4 cheese pizza with homemade bacon,  fresh spinach with a white garlic sauce and pepperoni, and a sausage/bacon/wild mushroom pizza.

We ate so fast I forgot to snap a shot of the pizzas when they arrived at the table.

Luckily, I got this before the plate was empty.

If you don’t want to sit at a picnic table to enjoy pizza and cocktails, you can cozy up to this spot.

Perfect for wine drinking and sunset watching.

My Favorite Goat

The kids ran around and danced to The Stones, played with the animals and picked apples off the tree.  While they were working off their steam I ventured(cocktail in hand) into the market for a little damage. I love their home-grown products and I love to support the farm.  Win-Win.  I gathered bags of freshly milled whole grain wheat, buckwheat and organic popcorn.  Jars of homemade pickles and pickled beets.  And a ton of honey….Rosemary, Lavender, Cocoa and Plain.  I bought flights of honey for hostess gifts.

The lovely Ladies of Heritage Prairie Farm

Despite the drought that has devastated the midwest, they had fresh corn for sale along with a variety of other organically grown vegetables.

Mozzarella that was used for our pizza and for sale in the shop

Part of my Haul

The Farm also offers the venue up for weddings and events.  They have cooking classes, a Saturday Farmer’s Market, and year round Farm Dinners that are based on seasonal crops.  Next time, I am scheduling my trip around a Farm Dinner!

Sun setting and stomaches full, we headed on home.

Thanks Heritage Prairie Farms for another great experience!

Back to School

I know it is a million degrees out there.

I should be buying more sunscreen instead of shopping for Fall Clothes.

But I can’t help doing a little ‘Back to School” shopping for Caroline, and I’ll confess,  me too.

I do have to look somewhat presentable at drop off don’t I?

I know, I know it’s drop off….but that first week I always try to look decent.

Then slowly, but surely I slip into the ponytail, sweat pants and flip-flop attire for the remainder of the year.

Here are some of the items I have on Caroline’s Back to School List

1. Girls Fuschia McAlister Boots

I am going to add a turquoise shoe string to these.

Perfect for all types of outfits

Crew Cuts

2. The Caroline Cardigan

I am a sucker for stripes and this red and pink number will be a neutral in my kindergartener’s closet.

The sweater’s name certainly makes it all the cuter!

Crew Cuts

3.  Georgia Smock Top

My Smock Time is limited with Caroline so I want to get this in while I still can!

Busy Bee

4. Liberty of London Dress

Crew Cuts

5. Mini Boden Sock Pack

6. Plaid Skirt

You all know my affection for plaid and why I couldn’t pass this up.

7. Zig Zag Lunch Box

Land’s End

Here are some the items on my Back to School List

So comfortable and the price point makes these shoes a steal!

The Gap

2. Boyfriend Pull Over Shirt

Loose, comfortable, and printed with owls.

I adore this top.

The Gap

3. Cargo Pants

I love a cargo pant, the olive green goes with everything.

The pant will transition from Indian Summer to Fall no problem.

J. Crew

4. Celine Color Block Bag

While any of these beauties would do.

My favorite is the grey and brown number.

5. Scoopneck Top In Silk Scarf Foulard

J. Crew

6. Perforated Cuff

I think I need a cuff bracelet intervention.

I love them and am acquiring quite a collection.

The addicition will continue with this cuff.

Kelly Wearstler

7. Kennedy Jacket

This Jacket is going to be a staple in my wardrobe.

One of my favorite color combinations is black and blue, so this was destined for my closet.

Kelly Wearstler

Now I am off to go buy more sun screen and enjoy what is left of summer!

Enjoy and Happy Shopping
